Interesting Ideas

What were the most interesting ideas you discovered in Digital Nation: Living Faster?
Why did these resonate with you?

  • I thought an idea that was interesting in "Living Faster" was the advantages and disadvantages of the new generation. They showed some advantages such as wider communication across the world, a wide access to information, and a better potential for learning, but some disadvantages included poorer communication skills, more health problems, and dependency to the internet.

The most interesting ideas I found was the fact that you are always connected. Although I think someone might not
read deeply into content, they at least read headlines and can stay connected with what's going on around the world.
Sure, many people will not use this resource to their advantage but there will always be people who will and that's
what counts.

  • The most interesting thing that I saw while watching the videos about living faster was that the digital natives are so attatched to their videogames, or cell phones, or laptops. I think that there needs to be a balance between what happens on the computer and what happens when talking to the person next to you. We should be looking for ways to keep personal contact the norm and having digital communication be a priveledge. - catherinemccurdy catherinemccurdy Feb 22, 2010 Catherine McCurdy

Questions & Comments

Please pose at least one question and respond to at least one question about Digital Nation: Living Faster

  • What is your view on a "Digital Native"? Do you believe they do more harm than good, or the other way around?
    • I think that like every other generation, they have the option to use their abilities and resources in good or bad ways (ex. adding to wikipedia vs. cyberbullying), but that unlike other generations they have the ability to do much bigger things because of the internet and how it can be used to reach larger groups of people faster. - DanielMiller91 DanielMiller91 Feb 9, 2010
    • I don't think that we should be looking for any harm in what the digital native does. This is the reality of our generation, and all future generations. We should be looking at, and adapting to this situation that we find ourselves in and use it as an opportunity to grow and connect with more people than any of us would have been able to connect with at any other time in history. - catherinemccurdy catherinemccurdy Feb 22, 2010 Catherine McCurdy
  • In the sections focusing on Digital Natives, they talk about how this generation has sacraficed their attention span for the ability to multitask in a sense.* Do you think this is a worthy trade? Do you ever just do your homework, or do you watch tv or listen to music at the same time? - DanielMiller91 DanielMiller91 Feb 9, 2010

I think that a "digital native" can work either way, it depends on the context in which they use the resources.
Like I states previously, a "digital native" is constantly connected and can benefit from knowing everything that's
going on around them, but they can also just be on Facebook all day being very unproductive. It can work both ways
and just depends on how the person chooses to go about it.

My question, does being constantly connected necessarily mean "living faster?"

Should anything be done to combat the amount of time that young people spend on computers, or should it be taken as a fact of life?
